The person who fatally shot himself Thursday in an alley near three schools has been identified as a Lakeside man.

Teenagers found the bloodied body of Scott Benjamin Dussell, 31, about 1:45 p.m. Friday, slumped behind a strip mall in the 12500 block of Lakeshore Drive near Lindo Lake Park and state Route 67. He had a gun in his lap, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and the sheriff’s department.

While the witness who initially reported the death remained on the phone with an emergency dispatcher, another man walked up, picked up the pistol and cleared the round from the chamber, sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said in a statement. He then put the gun in his pocket and walked away, the lieutenant said.

The ensuing search for the man with the gun prompted authorities at El Capitan High School and Lindo Park and Christian Foothills elementary schools to hold students in their classrooms.

The weapon was later spotted under a bush near where the victim was found, Giannantonio said.
