Emergency crews came to the rescue today of a hang-glider who crashed onto a steep sea bluff while flying above Black’s Beach and a second man who climbed down the precipice to try to help and got stuck there himself.
The accident occurred about 50 feet down the cliff near Torrey Pines Glider Port about 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Lifeguards and firefighters were responding to the crash when they got word of the second stranded man, fire department spokesman Lee Swanson said.
Personnel lowered themselves down to the victims on ropes and then hauled them back to the top of the bluff. Medics airlifted the hang-glider, who was conscious throughout his ordeal, to a hospital for treatment of a back injury of unknown severity.
The second rescued man was uninjured, Swanson said.
