A woman who fatally stabbed her ex-boyfriend in National City within days of their breakup was sentenced Friday to 27 years to life in state prison.
Miranda Mae Gallegos, 36, was convicted of first-degree murder for the April 1, 2012 murder of Scott Eugene Humbert, 25, who died of a stab wound to the chest.
South Bay Judge Stephanie Sontag denied Gallegos’ request to reduce the conviction to second-degree murder and sentenced the defendant to the maximum 25 years to life plus a year each for the use of a knife and a prior offense.
The judge said Gallegos’ testimony of what happened the night of the stabbing was “not credible,” saying there was “strong evidence for the first- degree charge to be upheld,” meaning it indicated the defendant’s intent to commit the crime.
Sontag said the wound appeared to be “one strong stabbing through the heart.”
Deputy District Attorney Ted Minahan said the fatal assault happened at the home of the victim’s mother shortly before 8 p.m. Gallegos was arrested about 12:30 the next morning at a Holiday Inn on East Plaza Boulevard.
