A city worker noticed an upside down kayak at Lake Sutherland Dam just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, said San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Christine Robbins.

The city worker told authorities the man — who frequently fishes at the lake, part of Sutherland Reservoir — had a heart condition, said another sheriff’s official.

Robbins said deputies checked the shoreline and asked for a helicopter to help in the search. A search-and-rescue team was unable to find Jones before dark, and the search was resumed Sunday.

Jones was declared dead at 9:36 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is pending.

Lake Sutherland, owned by the city, is about 45 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.
