A kayaker who died Saturday on Lake Sutherland was identified Monday as a 57-year-old Ramona man.
The body of Leonard Kevin Jones was recovered from the lake by San Diego Lifeguard divers Sunday morning, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.A city worker noticed an upside down kayak at Lake Sutherland Dam just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, said San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Christine Robbins.
The city worker told authorities the man — who frequently fishes at the lake, part of Sutherland Reservoir — had a heart condition, said another sheriff’s official.
Robbins said deputies checked the shoreline and asked for a helicopter to help in the search. A search-and-rescue team was unable to find Jones before dark, and the search was resumed Sunday.
Jones was declared dead at 9:36 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy is pending.
Lake Sutherland, owned by the city, is about 45 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.
