A man who had been waving what appeared to be a military-style gun out a window from inside a third-floor East Village apartment was found dead today after officers unleashed a fusillade of gunfire at the residence.
The events that led to the shooting began shortly after 10:30 a.m., when San Diego police got a report that a possibly suicidal military veteran in his late 60s was inside a rental unit in the 900 block of Broadway, armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.

About 11:45 a.m., officers fired about a dozen shots at the suspect’s apartment. What was prompted the gunfire was not immediately clear.
A SWAT team then entered the building — which also houses a bar, hamburger restaurant and deli-market on the ground floor — and sent in a robotic device equipped with a camera, confirming the death of the suspect.
It was unknown if the man, whose name was not available, was killed by the police gunfire or may have shot himself.
