An active-duty Marine was killed in a four-vehicle crash Saturday on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, and three other people were sent to hospitals.
Traffic was tied up for three hours following the crash on westbound Interstate 8 at state Route 163. The crash was reported shortly before 5 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The serviceman, who was 20, was declared dead at 5:19 a.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. His name was not immediately released.
Three people were taken to hospitals following the crash — two to Rady Children’s Hospital and one to Scripps Mercy Hospital, a San Diego Fire-Rescue dispatcher said.
The westbound lanes were closed at Texas Street and motorists were diverted off the freeway, according to the CHP. A SigAlert was issued shortly after 6:30 a.m., but CHP officials said around 8 a.m. that all lanes had been reopened.
