A wheelchair-bound woman who was fatally struck by a van while trying to cross an East County highway was publicly identified today as an 80-year-old Jacumba Hot Springs resident.

Jimmie Dyampert Genet was struck by a white Ford van about 6:40 p.m. Sunday while attempting to pilot her motorized wheelchair across the 44600 block of Old Highway 80 in her hometown, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.

The driver struck the pedestrian while turning east onto Old Highway 80, immediately stopped and called for help, authorities said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected in the crash, CHP Officer Robert Catano said.

Genet died at the scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office and the CHP.
