San Diego County Animal Services officers rescued more than 820 birds and two dogs from a rural property in Valley Center on Thursday, July 16, after receiving reports that the animals were sick and mistreated.

The department became aware of the conditions on the property from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, who had been aware of the owner.

Upon arriving at the property, located on the 11200 block of Lilac Vista Drive, officers spent more than 12 hours removing animals from the property and taking them to county shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad

“Responding to an operation of this size takes dedication and teamwork,” San Diego County Animal Services Director and Chief Veterinarian Dr. Brie Sarvis said. “When we arrived, our officers found birds living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Our staff and partners worked tirelessly to ensure these animals were safe, and we’re now focused on giving each one the care they need to recover.”

According to the county, officers found ducks, geese, roosters, peacocks, pigeons and parrots at the property. Veterinary staff is now treating the birds. San Diego Humane Society is expected to step in over the next few days to help with the ongoing medical care.

County Animal Services said the Animal Services Spirit Medical Fund will help cover the cost of caring for the birds with serious medical needs and complicated circumstances.

Animal Services’ investigation is still underway, and officials said they’ll decide on next steps in enforcement as the case develops.
