San Diego Gas & Electric residential customers will see relief on their energy bills this year, thanks to the California Climate Credit administered by the California Public Utilities Commission, officials announced Monday.
Residential electric customers and qualifying small businesses will receive an $81.38 credit on their April billing statement. Additionally, residential customers with natural gas service will receive a $54.21 credit, according to the utility.
In October, SDG&E residential customers who receive electric service will see a second credit applied to their billing statement. These three installments will total $217 in bill credits throughout 2025, providing assistance to households and small businesses.
The California Climate Credit stems from the state’s Cap-and-Trade Program, which mandates that polluters pay for their carbon emissions. The revenue from this program is redistributed to utility customers as credits, issued semiannually in April and October. This initiative is part of California’s broader strategy to support residents while transitioning toward a more sustainable energy future.
No action is required from customers to receive the credit, as it will be automatically applied to all eligible gas and electricity accounts. This includes customers enrolled in community-choice aggregation programs and master-metered accounts.
Due to varying billing cycles, the utility said not all customers will see the credit appear at the same time in April, but SDG&E will notify customers via email when their credit has been applied.
“Through collaboration with the California Public Utilities Commission, our customers will see some financial relief in their upcoming bill,” said SDG&E Chief Customer Officer Dana Golan. “If anyone is struggling to pay their bill, they can reach out to us to learn about various financial assistance programs we have available.”
For those facing financial hardships, SDG&E encourages customers to explore available assistance programs to help manage their energy costs. More information can be found on SDG&E’s website.
