Hundreds of local hospitality workers marched through downtown San Diego on Wednesday in support of a $25 minimum wage.
Members of the SEIU-USWW and IATSE 1122 unions sought to rally support for the San Diego Service Worker Minimum Wage Ordinance.
The ordinance would affect janitors and workers at hotels, stadiums, theaters, and the convention center in the City of San Diego.
“I need a $25 minimum wage because day-to-day life in San Diego is becoming more expensive every year. Necessities like food, gas, and bills are so expensive that I still need to live with my parents, and buying a house is not possible,” said Yamileth Solis, a steward at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
The rally was organized by Unite Here Local 30, which represents over 6,000 hotel, food service, airport, and gaming workers throughout San Diego County.
The city’s minimum wage is currently $16.85 per hour.
