Sen. Catherine Blakespear, D-Encinitas, has named The Plot restaurant in Oceanside the 38th Senate District Small Business of the Year.
The vegan restaurant is known, according to Blakespear’s office, for its outstanding food and sustainability practices.
The husband-and-wife team of Davin Waite and Jessica Waite are co-founders and co-owners of The Plot, 1733 S. Coast Highway.
It’s the latest honor for the eatery, which also has a Carlsbad Village location at The Cottages, and plans to expand to Costa Mesa.
The Plot ranked second on a list of the 20 best restaurants in San Diego by Tasting Table, and was a 2020 critic’s choice as best new restaurant in San Diego magazine. The business also received national recognition in Vegetarian Times as one of the best new restaurants in the U.S.
In addition, Davin Waite received the California Travel Association’s 2022 “Sustainability Advocate Award.” He was the only chef to receive the honor.
The owners’ mission, according to their website? “To make plant-based food irresistible, and to give back more than we take.”
To that end, the business also established The Plot Garden Project, “to educate, grow and expand upon the mission of The Plot while connecting our community with their source of food.” The Waites have set a goal of establishing a local garden space each time they open another location.
The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday, with brunch served on weekends.
