A Hillcrest mainstay, Crest Cafe, will celebrate its 40th anniversary Tuesday by hosting a community celebration.
The 3 p.m. party for the cafe, at 425 Robinson Ave., includes a DJ, photo booth, full bar and appetizers. Representatives from the state, city and San Diego County will be on hand to celebrate.
In addition, during the week of the anniversary 20% of the cafe’s sales will go to Casa De Luz, nonprofit that supports refugees in search of a better life.
Crest Cafe opened in 1982 and three years later, Luis Moreno took ownership. His daughter Cecelia Moreno joined him in the venture. Currently, the restaurant is operated by Cecelia Moreno, a cousin, Chef Ruben Medina, and his son Enrique.
Luis Moreno died in 2017.
Crest Cafe is a long-time member of the Hillcrest Business Association and California Restaurant Association along with founding donors for the Hillcrest Pride Flag and
soon-to-be-renovated Hillcrest sign.
The eatery is also participating in San Diego Restaurant Week, which started Sunday.
“The Crest Cafe is humbled and grateful to have kept its doors open during
unprecedented challenges,” the ownership said in a statement. “By following the mentorship of Luis Moreno we hope to be here for many more years to come.”
