Scripps Health has been named one of the nation’s top employers, earning the No. 8 ranking in the People Companies That Care list for 2022.

Scripps is the first and only San Diego company to be included in the People magazine and “Great Place to Work” annual list of the country’s top 100 workplaces, now in its sixth year. It is also the top-ranked health care company.

Collectively, the 2022 Companies that Care awards were based on more than 1 million employee survey responses and data from companies that represent more than 6.1 million U.S. workers.

In the survey, 83% of Scripps’ employees said it is a great place to work. Recognition is also based on an organization’s charitable giving, employee benefits and programs that go above and beyond to take care of both workers and the community.

“Scripps Health is an organization with compassion built into our DNA, so naturally we’re committed to taking care of our people and community in every way possible,” said Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder.

Scripps was recognized for a variety of initiatives. For example, Scripps administers a program called the Helping Our Peers in Emergency Fund, in which employees donate money and accrued paid time off to help fellow employees in crisis.

In the two years through June 2022, 57 Scripps employees received a share of donations totaling more than $102,000. Nearly 50 received time off from a pool of 2,726 hours of donated time.

Also, a food drive that started at Scripps Green Hospital to help co-workers struggling because of the pandemic grew into a donation program supported by departments throughout Scripps Health.

The program grew and ultimately dispensed 41,391 pounds of groceries, 280 prepared meals, 390 gift cards ranging from $10 to $50, and payroll deductions worth $40,681 from almost 600 employees and physicians. The effort helped 502 employees in need.

Additionally, Scripps implemented a COVID-19 vaccination program for its employees and the community at large, including a super station at the Del Mar Fairgrounds that by June 2021 had administered shots to 131,103 people.

Earlier this year, Fortune magazine named Scripps to its 100 Best Companies to Work For list, marking the 14th time it has received the honor. Forbes magazine listed Scripps among its annual America’s Best Employers for Women.
