Synergy Health Partners, a hospital staffing services firm offering orthopedic and general surgeon staffing, has named Dawn Anderson as chief marketing officer.

A statement said Anderson will lead all areas of the company’s enterprise marketing, including strategic go-to-market programs, digital media, public relations and integrated communications.

Anderson’s 25 years of healthcare experience includes roles in healthcare systems, pharmacy benefit management, health plans, finance, biotechnology, digital health and staffing solutions.

Prior to joining Synergy Health, Anderson served as senior vice-president of marketing and marketing advisor for AI-based innovators CureMetrix and CureMatch, two healthcare technology companies that leverage artificial intelligence to improve cancer detection and precision treatment and establish new category cancer brands.

Previously, she led marketing at AMN Healthcare, a healthcare staffing and workforce solutions company. At AMN, she led strategic marketing programs that expanded brands, created partnerships and drove demand in support of 25 brands and 17 service lines. 

Her career experience also includes marketing leadership positions with financing company CareCredit and pharmacy benefits firm MedImpact Healthcare Systems, along with PacifiCare Health Systems and Secure Horizons. She also has managed marketing and business development for hospital systems, including MemorialCare, FHP and Tenet.

Jingles Composer Glenn Erath Leaving Corky’s Pest Control

Advertising jingle composer Glenn Erath, who has had a 40-year career in marketing and advertising, is leaving as marketing director at Corky’s Pest Control, following the sale of the San Marcos-based company to a Swedish global pest control company.

Erath told Times of San Diego his last day at Corky’s will be Aug. 31. Since 2010 at Corky’s, Erath has coordinated media buys and social media and overseen creative for outdoor and print, as well as billboards, radio and TV spots.

Erath said Corky’s new owners, Stockholm-based Anticimex, might still use him periodically for various marketing projects. Meanwhile, Erath said he’s under contract to produce a new jingle for Busy Bees Lock & Keys in Chula Vista.

“I’m talking to several companies who need jingles for their websites and advertising, plus looking at several consulting opportunities in sales, advertising and marketing roles,” said Erath. “I’m not ready to retire yet.”

Anticimex, privately owned by EQT Partners, a Swedish equity firm, has acquired more than 200 companies resulting in sales doubling from four years ago, according to its website. With more than 8,000 employees, the company operates in more than 175 locations in 18 countries across five continents and serves three million customers annually. U.S. operations are active in 21 states.

Erath said the Corky’s Pest Control name will remain and the 125 technicians and staff personnel will retain their jobs. Owner Corky Mizer, who is expected to retire, has operated the company since its founding in 1967. The purchase price to Anticimex was not disclosed.

PRSA Accepting Entries for 2022 Bernays Awards

The Public Relations Society of America’s San Diego-Imperial Counties chapter is accepting entries for its 2022 Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards program. Categories include community relations, integrated communications, issues management, public affairs, media relations and research and evaluation.

The submission period runs from Aug. 15 to Sept. 16. Entry fees begin at $80 per entry for members, $90 for nonmembers. Some entry fees vary depending on categories and entry submission date. The first deadline is Friday, Sept. 2, second deadline with a $30 late fee per entry is Friday, Sept. 9 and final deadline with a $40 late fee per entry is Friday, Sept. 16. Entries will be judged by members of a partner PRSA chapter.

Silver and Bronze awards will be presented at an in-person awards ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at San Diego State University. The Silver award recognizes complete public relations programs incorporating research, planning, implementation and evaluation. The Bronze award recognizes public relations tactics consisting of individual items or components of campaigns.

A new Bronze award category, titled “Shoestring Budget,” will recognize work planned and implemented on a budget of $1,000 or less by a nonprofit, in-house team, individual or group grassroots effort.

This year’s awards program theme is “Emanating Excellence.” 2022 Bernays Awards co-chairs include: Jenny Mehlow, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance; Kara Handley, Naval Special Warfare, U.S. Navy Seal Teams; Patricia Maxwell Robertson, The Eco Monkey; Elena Gomez, University of San Diego.

The awards are named after Edward L. Bernays, the man who launched the field of public relations in the 1920s. Often called the “father of public relations,” Bernays’ history-making campaigns explain why people eat bacon with eggs, women smoke cigarettes and bank managers join civic groups. He died in 1995 at age 103.

News Service inewsource Earns Reporting Award

inewsource, a San Diego online investigative news service, reports its stories on the prevalence of racially-restrictive clauses in deeds in San Diego and around the country earned a first place award at the National Association of Black Journalists’ 2022 Salute to Excellence Awards.

The award, presented at NABJ’s annual conference Aug. 6 in Las Vegas, was in recognition of a story published online and on National Public Radio in November 2021. The award recognized the best in radio feature reporting among large market newsrooms.

inewsource partnered with NPR to determine the scope of racial covenant language in counties nationwide. The investigation found racial covenants are still on the books in nearly 50 states.

Restrictive covenants prohibited non-whites from owning real estate in San Diego County and nationally. This allowed some families to acquire and pass wealth between generations but shut out others from these opportunities. Today, racial covenants are not enforceable but many old deeds still have them.
