The team that narrowly lost the first round of bidding to redevelop the Sports Area announced a new plan for the 49-acre site that includes a permanent home for the San Diego Loyal.
The “Midway Village+” team is led by housing developers BRIDGE Housing and Toll Brothers and includes stadium designer Populous, venue developer Oak View Group and event manager Live Nation as well as numerous other national and local partners.
The plan, unveiled on Sunday, includes:
- Affordable homes for low-income and middle-income families
- Market-rate homes
- A new Sports Arena built and financed by the Oak View Group
- A 12-acre park that will serve the entire Midway area
- A permanent soccer stadium for the Loyal
“Midway Village+ will showcase San Diego’s leadership in sustainable design, smart mobility solutions, sports innovation and active lifestyle businesses,” said project executive David Malmuth. “It’s really, as we like to say, tomorrow’s San Diego — a new pedestrian
village for all of us.”
Former Mayor Kevin Faulconer selected Brookfield in August 2020 to redevelop the area, but the city was notified in June that the bidding process had likely violated the 2019 Surplus Land Act.
