Small Business Saturday was conceived ten years ago as the antidote to Black Friday at big box superstores and Cyber Monday with the online retailing giants.
In San Diego and throughout the United States, small businesses on local shopping streets will be offering their own deals.
Mayoral candidate Todd Gloria is planning to shop in his own neighborhood, going to stores in Mission Hills and then North Park — albeit with the media in tow.
Merchants in Mission Hills have set up a life-sized winter sleigh created by award-winning local designer Jennifer Duncan from Cake Bakery. Families can take photos, and children can decorate tree ornaments.
North Park is bringing local artists together to crate a mural titled “Love Thy Neighborhood” while shoppers watch the progress and listen to live music.
In Ocean Beach, the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association will offer pop-up promotions throughout the neighborhood, including a vintage VW bus photo booth and a market with local artisan products.
The shops in Little Italy will be joining the day’s events with special discounts and later hours to encourage shoppers to complete their holiday lists.
Also preparing for the day is Liberty Station, where a wide range of locally owned stores allow holiday shoppers to explore unique gifts.
