A Sears in Chula Vista is one of nine Sears and Kmart outlets that will be closing in December as the company’s new owners continue efforts to streamline the struggling legacy retail chain.

Transform Holdco LLC, which purchased all assets of Sears Holdings Corp. in February, announced Thursday it will be shuttering 96 locations across the country. The closures will leave the company with 182 locations.

“We have been working hard to position Transformco for success by focusing on our competitive strengths and pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors,” according to a statement from the company.

In addition to the Sears at 565 Broadway in Chula Vista, other stores closing are in Baldwin Hills, North Hollywood, West Covina, Temecula, Riverside, Moreno Valley and Palm Desert. The only Kmart closing is in Riverside.

Going-out-of-business sales at the affected stores will begin Dec. 2, according to Transformco.
