The city of Encinitas’ Environment Commission called on residents Wednesday to nominate people, businesses and nonprofits for its recently expanded Environmental Award Program.
The 4-year-old program was designed to spotlight a for-profit business and a nonprofit business for environmental leadership. This year’s program will also include an Environmental Hero category to honor an adult and a child or young adult for their environmental efforts outside of a business setting.
According to the city, the award program is the first of its kind in the county and one of only a handful across the U.S. The city presented the 2018 Excellence in Environmental Stewardship awards to the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, now called the Nature Collective, and Patagonia Cardiff-by-the- Sea.
The Environmental Hero awards will be given out at the Surfing Madonna Moonlight Beach Run on Oct. 26, while the Excellence in Environmental Stewardship awards will be presented at the Encinitas Half Marathon on March 29, 2020.
Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 15. Residents can nominate candidates for the award program at bit.ly/32SHeAv.
