The San Diego Foundation announced Thursday the appointment of nonprofit fundraising and development veteran Mark Stuart as president and chief executive officer.
A longtime member of the San Diego community, Stuart was previously chief development officer of San Diego Zoo Global and president of the zoo’s foundation.
“Mark Stuart is the perfect choice for the position of CEO,” said Constance Carroll, chair of the foundation board and chancellor of the San Diego Community College District. “Mark has a distinguished history of success and leadership in the San Diego region, characterized by enormous talent and an impressive track record in fundraising.”
Stuart was selected after a national search that ultimately drew more than 1,000 candidates. He succeeds Kathlyn Mead, who left the foundation last June.
“I am humbled and excited to begin my work with the foundation and its professional team of dedicated staff who partner with our generous philanthropists to serve our community,” said Stuart. “The leadership opportunities at San Diego Zoo Global prepared me well for this new role that focuses on ensuring the best days are ahead for all who call the San Diego region home.”
The foundation and its donors have granted more than $1.1 billion for philanthropic causes in the San Diego region over the past 40 years.
