Marriott International has picked San Diego to open the first of its experimental Moxy Hotels in California.

The nine-story, 126-room boutique hotel, located on Sixth Avenue between E and F Streets in the Gaslamp, is described a being an “urban playground” with “Instagram-worthy design, funky amenities and buzzing social spaces.”

“Moxy is an audacious and fresh brand that flips the conventional hotel service model on its head to pleasantly surprise travelers, without the exorbitant price tags,” said Vicki Poulos, senior global brand director for Moxy Hotels.

“What better place to grow our portfolio than in San Diego, a vibrant and playful destination within Southern California,” she added.

Each room features pegboards to hang clothing, free wireless, USB ports, a 55-inch flat-screen TV and beds framed by an LED-lit platform. Meals are served all day in the factory-inspired lobby and adjacent bar featuring San Diego craft beer.

The new Gaslamp hotel, which opened at the end of November, was developed in partnership with San Diego-based J Street Hospitality and Azul Hospitality Group.

“As with each of its hotels, Moxy tossed out the rule book and set out to push the envelope with Moxy San Diego,” said Tim Billing, area general manager of Azul.

Moxy Hotels is Marriott’s Millennial-focused brand that debuted in 2014 with the opening of the Moxy Milan.
