Gleason since 2014 has been the chief executive of Evans Hotels, owner of The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla and the Bahia Resort Hotel and the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in Mission Bay.
He’s been with the company since 1987. He also chairs the board of directors of the Los Angeles Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
Gleason, a 52-year-old Democrat, earned his law degree at the University of San Diego.
The position, which involves promoting tourism in California, is unpaid and does not require Senate confirmation.
