“After spending the last year consulting and working with the team, I couldn’t be more excited to officially join Local Media San Diego,” said Michaels. “It’s an honor to be a part of 91X, a station that represents the San Diego lifestyle, has deep roots serving our local community and is truly one of the icons of the Alternative format.”
Michaels has worked in the San Diego market since 2002, when he was named the founding program director of KBZT-FM, a position he held for nearly a decade. He then spent two years in Seattle at KNDD-FM, a station that calls itself “The End.”
Returning to San Diego in December 2015, he supervised re-branding of KFMB-FM 100.7, previously known as Jack FM, to its current name of 100.7 KFM-BFM. He also was responsible for the station’s format change from adult-contemporary pop to rock ‘n’ roll.
He left KFMB-FM in January 2017, following the end of a joint operating agreement between Local Media San Diego and Midwest Television, licensee of KFMB-FM.
“Garett is the best man for the job,” said Gregg Wolfson, vice president and general manager of Local Media San Diego. “His knowledge of San Diego, expertise in alternative radio, and leadership skills provide us much confidence as we celebrate 91X’s 35th birthday.”
Local Media San Diego, which is backed by private equity firm Thoma Bravo, also owns XHTZ 90.3-FM (Z-90) and XHRM 92.5-FM (Magic 92.5).
