San Diego Gas & Electric has entered the world of holiday shopping with an online portal that offers a wide range of energy-saving products, including popular smart thermostats.

The SDG&E Marketplace lists everything from thermostats to efficient air-conditioners to electric-car chargers. The site was inaugurated last year, but the 2017 holidays are is expected to be its first big season.

To generate interest — and save energy — the utility is offering $75 instant rebates on Nest and ecobee smart thermostats, which can cut heating and cooling costs by more than 20 percent on average. The rebates are available at sdge.com/instant.

The technology works by adjusting to a family’s schedule and connecting to other devices, such as an Amazon Echo, for voice control.

“It starts to learn your behavior and your schedule,” explained Lisa Davidson, director of customer programs. “I could order groceries from my thermostat if I wanted to.”

Both thermostats are on display at the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center in Clairemont, where there is a “smart home” showcase of the latest connected home technologies to increase energy efficiency, convenience and security.
