Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, recognized a small San Diego business Tuesday for becoming a major supplier of drug test kits to the retailer’s western U.S. pharmacies.
Confirm Biosciences, a company launched in 2008, makes drug test kits that sell under Walmart’s ReliOn brand. The kits, which retail for as low as $7.95 for a marijuana test, are purchased by families, small businesses and others looking to screen for drug use.
“Walmart has been a wonderful partner,” said Zeynep Ilgas, president of Confirm Biosciences. “They believe in us. After we started working with Walmart, we expanded our capacity,”
The relationship with Walmart began three years ago. As sales increased, Ilgas moved her company to a 23,000-square-foot facility near Scripps Ranch, where test kits are assembled under both the Confirm Biosciences and ReliOn brands.
Confirm Biosciences now ships thousands of test kits every week and will exceed $10 million in sales this year, Ilgas said. The company has been recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing in America.
Phil Serghini, director of public affairs for Walmart, said the company made a commitment in 2013 to purchase an additional $250 billion in American-made products over a decade. Small, local companies like Confirm Biosciences are being actively recruited
“It’s an effort to jump start manufacturing here in the United States and create 1 million jobs,” he said, adding that “we are really very proud to be partnering with Zynep.”
Jeffy Sanders, president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, told workers at Confirm Biosciences that the chamber is “proud of what you’ve done” to build a successful business with Walmart.
“It always makes you feed good when you see a local business take up steam,” he said.
