The Makers Quarter in downtown San Diego is growing with groundbreaking for a six-story collaborative office hub with retail and restaurant space.
The development team L2HP, which is composed of Lankford & Associates, HP Investors and Hensel Phelps, broke ground on Tuesday afternoon for Block D of the quarter at 845 15th Street.
Architecture and design firm BNIM, which help create the master plan for the quarter, described the building as “a workplace that presents significant energy cost savings and supports human wellness” through flexible spaces, cross ventilation, daylight and views.
Plans for the six-block Makers Quarter area call for one million square feet of office space, 800 residences, public parks, and 175,000 square feet of restaurants, retail and entertainment space.
“The East Village is undergoing a renaissance and transforming into a hub for those who want to live and work in one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in San Diego,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer before the groundbreaking.
“This is the kind of forward-thinking, sustainable office space that San Diego needs and businesses can use to attract top-tier employees who want to work in the heart of our city,” he added.
Block D is expected to open in the spring of 2018.
