General Dynamics NASSCO is inviting the public to the Saturday evening launch of the final ship in a program that built eight giant, environmentally friendly tankers.

Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. for the christening and launch of the Palmetto State.

Rep. Susan Davis will speak during the ceremony, which takes place at 2798 East Harbor Drive in Barrio Logan.

The 610-foot-long, 50,000-ton “ECO-class” tanker can be converted to burn clean natural gas to make it even more environmentally friendly.

NASSCO, the only major shipyard on the West Coast, has delivered 11 ships since 2015.
