The developer of the shopping center across from the controversial One Paseo project in Carmel Valley announced Tuesday a 120,000-square foot expansion due to be completed in 2018.

Orange County-based Donahue Schriber Realty Group, which opposed the original One Paseo project, said the expansion of Del Mar Highlands Town Center at Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real will accommodate “a wide-array of retail, dining and services tailored to meet the needs of the area’s highly educated, affluent, time-constrained customer.”

The centerpiece of the new Collection at Del Mar Highlands Town Center will be a 25,000-square-foot store for natural foods grocer Jimbo’s.

“It’s much more than a shopping center expansion, this is about continuing to be the meeting place or as the name so adequately describes, the town center of the Carmel Valley community,” said Patrick Donahue, chairman and chief executive officer of Donahue Schriber.

The expansion will bring the center’s total retail space to 380,522 square feet. A multi-level parking structure was completed in October.

Donahue Schriber helped finance a petition drive to overturn the San Diego City Council’s approval of the original One Paseo project, but ultimately supported a smaller version of the development across El Camino Real from the existing center.
