It’s hard to be a humbug about Christmas music. For the 38th consecutive holiday season, CBS Radio’s KyXy 96.5-FM has changed its format to continuous holiday music. And, Sam Bass has been part of every one of them.
Since Bass began his on-air shifts at the station in March 1978, during the weeks leading up to Dec. 25, the station has switched to playing only Christmas favorites.
“I like the variety we give our listeners, ranging from the traditional songs sung by the great artists to the funny songs about grandma getting run over by a reindeer,” said Bass. “I also enjoy the young artists like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber doing their Christmas songs. I think we mix it up better than anyone.”
11 Marketing Groups Attending 13th Annual Mingle Bells Party
SDX, formerly the San Diego Ad Club, along with 10 other local marketing groups, will present the 13th annual Mingle Bells on Thursday, Dec. 8. Mingle Bells is the annual end-of-year party attended by members of professional groups spanning San Diego’s advertising, business communications, marketing, public relations, social media and graphic arts industries. The party runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Fluxx nightclub, 500 4th Avenue in the Gaslamp. More than 400 people are expected to attend.
In addition to SDX, attendees will include members of Ad 2 San Diego, American Institute of Graphic Arts, San Diego American Marketing Association, Health Care Communicators of San Diego, International Association of Business Communicators, San Diego Advertising Fund for Emergencies, Southern California Broadcasters Association, Society for Experiential Graphic Design, University of California San Diego Design Lab and SD Direct (formerly the San Diego Direct Marketing Association)

Channel 6 Sponsoring Toys for Joy
XETV-TV CW San Diego 6 is serving as a sponsor of The Rock Church’s 20th annual Toys for Joy event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. The free toy, food and clothing giveaway will be held at four locations, including Lincoln High School, Southwest High School, San Marcos High School and El Cajon Valley High School. Children ages up to 11 receive a free toy and families will have the opportunity to receive free lunch and groceries. Free clothing will be available at Lincoln High School.
Church officials expect attendance will exceed 23,000 people at the four locations. In addition, organizers expect more than 20,000 toys, 12,000 bags of groceries and 250,000 articles of clothing will be distributed to families in need. KOGO-AM News Radio 600 Airs Remote to Benefit Salvation Army
iHeart Media San Diego’s KOGO-AM News Radio 600 is planning a live broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Target store parking lot at 250 Broadway in El Cajon, in support of the 40th annual East County Toy and Food Drive. KOGO’s Cliff Albert, LaDona Harvey, Ted Garcia and Cal Walker will help collect donations benefiting the Salvation Army El Cajon Corps and East County families.
Also as part of the event, a parade of fire trucks from Heartland Fire and Rescue Department is planned. About a dozen fire trucks will leave at about 11 a.m.from Fire Station No. 6, 100 E. Lexington in El Cajon, and arrive at approximately 11:15 a.m. at the Target parking lot.
KOGO-AM has annually supported this fundraiser with a live remote since 1996. Started in 1976, the East County Toy and Food Drive is one of the oldest and largest toy and food drives in San Diego County.
News Media Groups to Gather for Holiday Mixer
The San Diego Press Club, along with six other news media-related professional and networking groups, will gather for a holiday mixer with a no-host bar from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 12, at the Athens Market Taverna, 109 W. “F” Street in downtown San Diego. Admission and appetizers are free.
In addition to the Press Club, the groups include the Asian American Journalists Association of San Diego, National Association of Hispanic Journalists of San Diego, Online News Association, Pacific Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, San Diego Association of Black Journalists and Society of Professional Journalists San Diego chapter.
