The San Diego-area stores of the nation’s largest retailer are gearing up for the annual back-to-school rush beginning this weekend.

With classes starting in the San Diego Unified School District on Aug. 29, Walmart‘s managers are expecting the major shopping rush to begin this weekend and last though next.

“This whole week will be insanely busy,” said Carolina Arredondo, an assistant manager at the Murphy Canyon store. “We’ll need to be on top of the stocking.”

She said that between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., when parents are off work and can shop, it’s a constant challenge to keep school supplies stocked.

In fact, back-to-school is the second busiest time of the year for Walmart after the year-end holidays.

The retailer’s lowest-priced item this year is a 17-cent notebook, but the hottest products are licensed from popular movies like “Ghostbusters” and “Finding Dory.”

Walmart is also selling back-to-college items like futons, desks and dorm-sized refrigerators and microwaves.

The company employees 90,000 in California at 297 stores.
