General Dynamics NASSCO is inviting the public to Saturday’s morning’s christening of a 610-foot tanker at the shipyard in Barrio Logan.

Gates at 2798 East Harbor Drive open at 9 a.m. for the 10 a.m. ceremony, which is free. Rep. Scott Peters will be the keynote speaker.

The Magnolia State is the second ship in a five-vessel contract will American Petroleum Tankers. The energy-efficient ships have a capacity of 330,000 barrels.

Nearly 2,000 shipyard workers had a role in constructing the ship. NASSCO is the only major shipyard on the West Coast conducting new construction and repair.
