Trammell Crow Residential’s Southern California Division began construction Monday of The Alexan, a mixed-use development anchored by a 19-story luxury apartment tower near the Central Library in downtown San Diego.

The project includes 209 units in the tower, another 104 units in a four-story residential building, underground parking, and a restaurant in a century-old church building on the site. Apartments will range from 459-square-foot studios to 2,228-square-foot, two-bedroom penthouses.

The Alexan will occupy the majority of the block bounded by J, K, 13th and 14th streets. The buildings were designed by Joseph Wong Design Associates in a contemporary loft style in keeping with the East Village’s historic industrial aesthetic.

“This project is all about the resident having a wonderful living experience. The units will have lots of natural light, usable balconies, beautiful unobstructed views and high-end finishes,” said Alec Schiffer, managing director of Trammell Crow Residential.

“It’s a great addition to the East Village, which is continuing to reveal itself as the place residents want to live to enjoy a 24/7 urban lifestyle in San Diego’s beautiful waterfront downtown,” he added.

Including The Alexan, Trammell Crow Residential is currently developing nearly 3,000 apartment units in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties valued at more than $900 million.
