A longtime Scripps surgeon was elected this year’s chairwoman of the California Division of the American Cancer Society, Scripps Health announced Friday.

Dr. Ujwala Rajgopal, a Rancho Penasquitos resident, spent the past decade in various surgical leadership positions at Scripps hospitals in San Diego, La Jolla and Encinitas. She also has volunteered with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and has served on The American Cancer Society’s California Division Physician Engagement and Health System teams, according to Scripps.

“The American Cancer Society is a leading force in the fight against cancer and they share Scripps’ commitment to helping people stay well and get well, through education, research, advocacy and high-quality care,” Rajgopal said. “Scripps encourages patients to have discussions with their doctors about appropriate cancer screenings, which can help detect cancers at their earliest stages.”

Rajgopal will now head one of the American Cancer Society’s 13 divisions.

The California division assists more than 80,000 patients annually, according to Scripps.
