San Diego County Credit Union announced Wednesday it officially set a Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period at its annual Super Shred event last month.

A total of 584,350 pounds of paper were shredded and recycled, saving approximately 5,000 trees. More than 10,000 people turned out at Qualcomm Stadium on July 25 to properly dispose of confidential information and set a new record. Shred-It provided the shredding services.

Throughout the day, donations were collected for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, raising more than $8,000.

SDCCU began hosting its free shredding events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 1.8 million pounds of paper at no charge.

“SDCCU is committed to helping our customers and the community protect their confidential data and privacy,” said Teresa Halleck, the credit union’s president and CEO. “We are happy that more than 10,000 people took advantage of the free shredding services and no longer have sensitive information sitting around their homes and offices.”

San Diego County Credit Union serves over 292,000 customers in San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties.
