Black Friday crowds will give way to relaxed shopping in traditional downtowns and urban districts throughout the San Diego area on Small Business Saturday.

Businesses in El Cajon, La Mesa, Leucadia, North Park, Ocean Beach and other neighborhoods will be offering a wide variety of discounts and deals.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Council President Todd Gloria will shop in North Park, visiting a number of restaurants and retailers, and sampling local craft brew.

Small Business Saturday, started by American Express in 2010, encourages people to shop small on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The event promotes holiday shopping at small, local businesses, which helps these businesses recruit returning customers.

“On Small Business Saturday, we rededicate ourselves to ensuring ours is a country where small businesses can thrive,” said President Obama in a proclamation issued Tuesday.
