Rail service along the North County coastline will be interrupted the weekend of Oct. 25-26 because of work on tracks in the Sorrento Valley, the North County Transit District announced Thursday.
There will be no Coaster trains that weekend, and southbound Amtrak trains will stop in Oceanside, according to the NCTD. Metrolink trains, which go no farther south than Oceanside, will not be affected.
According to the transit agency, Amtrak passengers with a valid fare will be allowed to ride on its bus route 101 along the coastline that weekend. An extra bus will run the route that Saturday to accommodate the expected heavier passenger loads.
The NCTD urged travelers who want to ride the rails that weekend to plan ahead.
The disruption will allow for crews to work on a $33.7 million project to lay a second track along 1.1 miles in the Sorrento Valley. The work includes raising the existing track up to five feet in some areas to get it above a potential flooding level, replacing two wooden trestle bridges that are around 70 years old, and building retaining walls, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.
The project will also include adding 81 spaces to the parking lot at the Sorrento Valley Station, bringing the total number of slots to 189, according to the regional planning agency.
Normal service will resume Monday, Oct. 27.
