San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman kicked off a downtown “startup crawl” Wednesday to raise visibility for San Diego’s entrepreneurial community.

Sherman presented a proclamation in the offices of Zeeto Media, an online marketing company, as dozens of employees and colleagues from other local companies looked on.

He said he hoped the national investment community would take notice of “some good, solid companies worth putting some dollars into.”

Zeeto Media, a 3 1/2-year-old company, now has 55 employees. Its clients include national brands like Kellogg’s, Prilosec and Match.com.

The crawl is part of San Diego Startup Week, a series of events, panels and celebrations in downtown San Diego designed to bring attention to innovators in cleantech, biotech, defense tech, cross-border manufacturing, mobile tech and online marketplaces. Organizers said four separate startup crawls were planned for Wednesday.

Sherman said he has a special appreciation for startups because he helped start an insurance agency with this father.

“I really have an appreciation for what everybody does,” he told the entrepreneurs. “I remember the nights of worrying about making payroll.”

Stephan Goss, CEO of Zeeto Media, said Sherman has visited the company before, and praised city officials for “trying hard” to be responsive to the needs of local startups. The proclamation named June 18 “Zeeto Media Day” in San Diego.
