The San Carlos Community Garden (SCCG) has long been a gathering place for residents to grow food, connect with neighbors and learn about sustainable gardening. This summer, volunteers and community members helped launch the garden’s next chapter.
In June, more than 45 volunteers from San Diego Gas & Electric® (SDG&E®) and the San Carlos community came together to help kick off SCCG’s multi-year garden improvement initiative. Working side by side, volunteers dismantled the aging garden plots and built eight new community garden beds, marking the first step in improving the garden for future generations.
“We are incredibly grateful to the SDG&E volunteers who helped us take the first major step in replacing our aging garden beds with a stronger, more sustainable design that will serve our community for years to come,” shared Kelly Wood, chair of the SCCG. “As a 100% volunteer-run organization, partnerships like this are essential to our ability to grow and thrive, and we are excited to work alongside organizations like SDG&E that invest their time, talent and resources into meaningful community projects.”
Volunteers also worked on other projects throughout the property, including weeding and mulching garden areas, repainting plot identification numbers, planting pollinator-friendly plants and painting rocks that will become part of the sensory garden.
SDG&E’s collaboration helped SCCG make meaningful progress on the first phase of its multi-year improvement plan. Many of the garden’s original plots were built by community members when SCCG first broke ground more than 14 years ago and have now reached the end of their lifespan. With support from community-minded groups and organizations, SCCG hopes to replace all 71 garden plots over the next three to four years.
“The collaboration with the San Carlos Community Garden allowed our team to invest in a shared community space and create a lasting impact,” shared Shaina Gross, SDG&E community relations manager. “For employees who call San Carlos home, the project was especially rewarding because it gave us the opportunity to give back in our own neighborhood.”
Beyond garden improvements, SCCG has spent the summer uniting the community through events such as its annual Stuff the Pantry Summer Concert Series and Gardening Tool Care and Sharpening Workshop. These programs help advance SCCG’s mission of building community connections, giving back through volunteerism and cultivating a deeper appreciation for environmental stewardship.
