ArtPower and Ariel Quartet, despite an interruption from the pandemic, will meet an impressive goal next month in La Jolla – to perform the complete Beethoven cycle.
To accomplish the feat, in honor of the composer’s 250th birthday in 2020, the quartet set out in 2019 to perform all 16 of Beethoven’s string quartets.
The last program, at 7 p.m. April 1, includes:
- String Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4,
- String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 74, no. 10, and
- String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 133, no. 17, Grosse Fuge.
While the pandemic forced the cancellation of two of the quartet’s live performances, last season the musicians recorded six pieces exclusively for ArtPower. These can be found on ArtPower’s YouTube channel.
The upcoming concert, part of ArtPower’s chamber music series, will take place at the Department of Music’s Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at UC San Diego, with a pre-performance ArtTalk at 7 p.m. at The Loft.
Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased online.
Ariel Quartet serves as the Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where they direct the chamber music program and perform their own annual series of concerts, in addition to touring.
ArtPower at UC San Diego presents performing arts in an attempt to engage, energize and transform the cultural life of the university and the surrounding community.
