Five comedians led by Brian Simpson will perform in a free outdoor concert Saturday in the plaza just north of the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park.

Titled “San Diego’s Gods of Comedy, an Evening of Clean, Fun Comedy for the Whole Family,” the event is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Old Globe’s Copley Plaza, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.

Presented by AXIS, it’s being held between Saturday’s matinee and evening performances during the closing weekend of Ken Ludwig’s “The Gods of Comedy.”

The event will be hosted by Russell Brock, a regular at The Comedy Store in La Jolla who has opened for Doug Stanhope, Tom Green and Jeff Garlin.

Simpson is a stand-up comic who started in San Diego and moved to West Hollywood to pursue his comedic dreams. After getting a big break on the “Kill Tony” show, he was quickly noticed by the world-famous Comedy Store, and soon after became a paid regular.

Other performers at the free event are:

  • Em Allyn — She began performing in the Midwest before relocating to Southern California. A former San Diego resident, she now lives in Los Angeles.
  • Jason Cheny — Born and raised in Taiwan, he is the winner of The World Series of Comedy main event in Las Vegas, and appeared on “Laughs” on Fox and Hulu and “Laff Tracks” on TruTV.
  • Lisa Gilbert — She started her stand-up career in her hometown of San Diego, married late in life and now is a wife and mother, with an ability to find humor in the everyday.
  • And Brandon Potter — Described as San Diego’s gayest comedian, since 2013 he has been tackling controversial issues with his nothing-off-limits approach.

AXIS, an arm of the Old Globe, provides free cultural events. More than 16,000 people attended AXIS events at the Globe in 2018, organizers said.
