The Diversionary Theatre in University Heights has announced its new season, saying the focus will be on the “intensely personal nature of gender.”

The five-play season, the theater’s 34th, includes a world premiere production, a West Coast premiere, and two San Diego premieres.

Matt Morrow, the theater’s executive artistic director, said two of the plays will focus on the transgender experience. Those plays are “Plot Points in Our Sexual Development” and “A Kind of Weather.”

Given the politicization and daily attacks on our transgender community, it’s vital that Diversionary creates a space where they can feel safe, and see themselves represented on our stage,” Morrow said.

The season opens Sept. 21 with the coming-of-age musical “Girlfriend” and concludes with the May 30 run of the musical “Head Over Heels.”

Tickets start at $15 each, while subscriptions start at $70. For more information, see Diversionary’s web site.
