Trio Ellas, three musicians inspired by mariachi, will headline the “Come Dream with Us” concert on Sunday to benefit the North County Immigration and Citizenship Center.
The center was formed in 2013 by members of Solana Beach Presbyterian Church to assist immigrants who are navigating the path to legal status and citizenship. Staff and volunteers provide affordable legal and educational services.
The Los Angeles-based trio is composed of Suemy Gonzalez on violin, Nelly Cortez — a fourth generation mariachi musician — on guitarron and Stephanie Amaro on guitar.
While they don’t neglect mariachi numbers, their music has been described as “a surprising re-imagining of pop and regional music standards.” They’ve recorded for Lady Gaga and Benjamin Gibbard, and performed live with Sheila E. and Lila Downs.
The concert takes place on May 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church. Tickets are available online at $60 for adults and $30 for students. The event includes a light supper and silent auction.
