San Diego New Music will explore the frontiers of classical music this spring with the world premiere of a new composition in La Jolla and a program of all San Diego music in Carlsbad.
The Athenaeum in La Jolla will be the venue for the premiere of Aneas in the Underworld by Christopher Adler, professor of composition at the University of San Diego, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29. Adler has been collaborating with guitarist Colin McAllister on the chamber oratorio for nearly a decade.
Then on Tuesday, April 16, the organization will present “Made in San Diego,” featuring works by local composers performed by members of the local classical music community.
This program spans current and former faculty from prominent area institutions, freelance composers, and alumnae of San Diego’s universities, including some of the most active composers and performers in our region. The free concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Schulman Auditorium in the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane.
The season concludes at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at the Athenaeum with “In the Land of Forgotten Dreams,” curated by Grammy-winning soprano, Susan Narucki. This will be an intimate program of works for voice, guitar and flute.
The nonprofit new music organization is dedicated to the public performance of innovative and adventurous contemporary music from the 20th and 21st centuries.
