California State Parks and the San Pasqual Battlefield Volunteer Association will present a re-enactment of the pivotal 1846 Battle of San Pasqual on Sunday.
The battle was the bloodiest ever fought in California but led to the capture of Los Angeles and ultimate American victory in the Mexican-American War.
Volunteers will set up a 19th century Army encampment, fire a historic 12-pound howitzer and re-enact events from the perspective of both U.S. and Mexican soldiers.
The free event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park, 15808 San Pasqual Valley Road in Escondido.
The historic battlefield is located about a mile east of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
