Maritime Museum of San Diego home to numerous collections of historic vessels and 500 years of seafaring history, from sail to steam to submarine, opens docent volunteer training program to newcomers Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.
The 501c3 non-profit Museum has an international reputation for excellence in restoring, maintaining, and operating historic vessels including the world’s oldest active sailing ship, Star of India.
According to Dr. Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., president/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego: “The docents and volunteer community here is what is distinctly different and powerful. Their passion and pride shared with visitors is what keeps the experience alive and unique for guests.”

Docent volunteers will learn about worldwide maritime history with a special focus on the 16th through 21st centuries represented by the vessels and artifacts in the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s collection. Docents will engage with museum visitors, fielding their questions and sharing knowledge to enrich the guest experience. Training is carried out through a series of lectures, suggested readings and walking tours.
Aspiring docents are invited to attend the 2019 training series of lectures and ship tours beginning Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 at the Maritime Museum of San Diego on the upper deck of the historic 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley. Interested members of the community can obtain more information about the Docent Training Program by contacting the Docent Training Coordinator Dr. Jim Cassidy at 661-406-0605 or at
This once a year formal training runs for 13 consecutive weeks. Training sessions are Mondays and begin at 9 a.m. with a short meet-and-greet social. Classes run until noon, immediately followed by a 45-minute walking tour of one of the ships, and cover a comprehensive variety of topics.
Volunteers interested in the program yet are unable to attend the Monday morning training classes can participate in the Museum’s special mentorship program whereby docent recruits work one-on-one with an experienced docent to build the necessary skill-set. Membership in the Maritime Museum of San Diego is required to be a docent.
