ArtPower announced it’s 15th season at UC San Diego on Wednesday, unveiling a program of jazz, world music, dance, chamber music and special events.

The season opens Oct. 5 with the chamber music of Paris-based Quatuor Van Kuijk and ends May 9 with the hip-hop drama of Dahlak Brathwaite‘s “Spiritrials.”

Other highlights of the new season include the return of the Ariel Quartet, which will perform Beethoven in honor of the composer’s 250th birthday; the world premiere of “Inheritance, “a multimedia chamber opera with music by Lei Liang and featuring Grammy Award–winning soprano Susan Narucki; Manual Cinema’s performance of “No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks,” exploring Brook’s remarkable career in American literary history; and a special event featuring acclaimed pianist Vijay Iyer and cellist Matt Haimovitz.

“Woven through many of the ArtPower performances this season are important stories of seminal figures in black history and dispatches from the black experience in America,” said executive director Jordan Peimer. “The global music series takes us across the African continent, highlighting artists whose work reflects some of the rich traditions that continue to influence American culture.”

A total of 27 different performances are scheduled at five venues across the campus in La Jolla.

A complete 2018-19 schedule is available online. Subscriptions go on sale June 18 and single tickets on July 23.
