A troupe of aerial dancers will begin a six-month arts residency at the San Diego International Airport next week, entertaining passengers with with trapeze stunts, acrobatics, music and choreographed dance.
The Astraeus Aerial Dance Theatre residency will begin Wednesday with dancers flying mid-air across the dramatic, three-story backdrop of the terminal’s Sunset Cove area.
Over the six-month residency, which is part of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s performing arts program, the Astraeus dancers will create, rehearse, and perform new content inspired by the airport environment.
Astraeus, which is based in San Diego, was founded in 2015 by aerialist and former California Ballet Company Principal Ballerina Jennifer Curry Wingrove,. The troupe has received top awards at the San Diego International Fringe Festival.
The airport’s performing arts residency program provides a platform for the development and performance of new work that simultaneously enriches the airport experience for passengers and cultivates the regional performing arts community.
