California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia will read from his work Monday evening at a free event at the San Diego Central Library downtown.

Gioia, who is also a professor of poetry at the University of Southern California, will be joined by San Diego poets Karen An-Hwei Lee and Michael Chung Klam at the 6 p.m. reading in the Shiley Special Events Suite.

The event is part of a tour by Gioia of all 58 counties in the Golden State.

“I believe that poetry is for everyone,” Gioia has said. “It is not a remote or intellectual art.”

Gioia was born in Hawthorne, the son of a Sicilian father and a Mexican mother, and was the first person in his family to attend college. He was appointed Poet Laureate by Gov. Jerry Brown in December 2015
