The Marston House Museum, the historic home in Balboa Park operated by the Save Our Heritage Organisation will be closed for three months beginning Monday so a new roof can be installed.
The mansion, constructed in 1905 on Seventh Avenue, is described by SOHO as one of California’s finest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement around the turn of the century. It will also get new gutters.
The 8,500-square-foot home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was owned by San Diego civic leader George Marston and his wife, Anna Gunn Marston. The Marston family donated the property to the city in 1987.
“We are pleased the city is undertaking this much-needed roofing work to preserve and maintain one of San Diego’s most beloved cultural sites,” said Bruce Coons, SOHO’s executive director. “We hope residents and tourists will be understanding during the three-month repair period.”
The home’s lawn and garden, which are used for weddings, will remain open, and the gift shop will be open on weekends, according to SOHO.
The preservationist group also hopes to make some interior renovations during the closure, if funding becomes available.
