More than 100 sculptures of LEGO bricks, from original works to re-imaged masterpieces, are on display in an exhibit opening Friday at the Fleet Science Center.
“The Art of the Brick” by Nathan Sawaya, a corporate lawyer turned full-time artist, was ranked by CNN as a top ten “Global Must-See Exhibition.” The four-month run in San Diego is the first in Southern California.
Visitors will have the opportunity to get up-close and in-person with “Yellow,” a life-size sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow LEGO bricks cascading from the cavity, and walk under a 20-foot-long T-Rex dinosaur skeleton.
“The Art of the Brick takes LEGO somewhere you wouldn’t expect and shows you things you have never seen before,” said Sawaya. “The goal with this collection of art is to demonstrate the potential of imagination and the power of creativity.”
The LEGO creations, constructed from countless individual pieces, were built from standard bricks beginning as early as 2002.
Tickets, which include an IMAX movie, are $29.95 for adults $24.95 for juniors. The museum in Balboa Park is open daily.
