The Old Globe announced Monday that managing director Michael G. Murphy will leave the Balboa Park institution to head Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo.

Murphy served as managing director from 2012 to the present, and as general manager from 2003 to 2012. He will begin his new job as president and CEO of the Buffalo arts center in October.

“I will miss San Diego and The Old Globe, especially the dedicated and creative staff who dare to tackle any challenge, raising the bar time after time,” Murphy said. “ In the 13 years I’ve been here I’ve watched the Globe continue to grow in its national prominence and deepen its service to San Diego.”

Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein described Shea’s Performing Arts Center as “a wonderful institution poised for real growth” and noted that Buffalo is Murphy’s home.

“We’re thrilled by this exciting new opportunity for him and wish him well, and yet we will miss him dearly,” Edelstein said.

Vicki L. Zeiger, chair of the Old Globe’s board of directors, said the theater is developing a transition plan while beginning to seek a replacement for Murphy.
